| Memorial Day
I stand between the crosses white, that rise row after row And cover the horizon as far as eye can go These are the graves of soldiers who died to set us free And being in this garden is a holy place to me There at my feet is blossoming an gaping hole, a grave Dug for the young soldier who's life could not be saved From the horror of the battlefield, his God has set him free And brought his earthy body, back here where it should be My eye sees the procession now, the coffin is in sight It's covered with the flag it's worn ,throughout it's homeward flight Here comes the sad young bugler a trumpet in his hand And there are the gun bearers who a t his side will stand And see the sad old preacher, his heart is in his eyes As he prepares this service for this brave soldier boy And see there the sad mourners, his momma and his dad His brothers and his sister and the best friend that he had With royal and regal splendor , pallbearers, at snails pace Gently take the coffin and slip it in its place And the soldiers give a last salute as they do step away And in deep and abject sorrow, the preacher prays with grace And with a crack that jars your soul, the guns begin to fire Three times they ring a last salute above that funeral bier And then the saddest thing of all for taps begins to play To bring to a sad closing this soldiers life today The flag they fold tri cornered, with motions sure and slow And then the leading officer will to the mother go He'll kneel and place it carefully with honor in her hands And let her know her country cares and that it understands The sorrow and the pride she feels on this sad parting day When his only son and pride and joy the battle took away And from this day here forward for all the years that be His name it will be honored by people just like me For in the month of May each year a tribute we will pay To all those people who have served and gave their life away We'll stand between those crosses each tiny flag we'll view And say a silent thank you to the ones who died for you. Taps: Day is done, Gone the sun, From the earth, from the sea, from the sky All is well, safely rest, GOD IS NIGH! SLEEP MY SOLDIER, SLEEP WELL |
