The Prairie Is My Garden" by Harvey Dunn

"Dakota Plains"

I've felt the ocean soft as rain;
I've climbed a mountain in the sky.
But for me I'll take the prairie plain,
Serene for me from morn til nigh.

To see the long tall prairie grass
Ripplin' like water in the wind;
To see the beauty come to pass,
And to feel the calmness from within.

Sod houses sat there long ago
As Pioneers labored 'ore the soil.
They wearily worked with hand and hoe;
A labor of love was the toil.

Great Sioux Indians roamed these plains
To hunt and fish for food.
This outdoors was wealth and fame
This land they understood.

The Sacred Hills they did love
And respected peaks so high
Here they spoke to God above
As He answered their every cry.

The Badlands are a beautiful sight;
A land of colored hues.
Purples and pinks left and right;
All colors you can't refuse.

But still the great Dakota plains
Are what I love the best.
Here I stood in sun and rain
And originally built my nest.

Here I hope to live my days,
And someday soon return
To feel the warm and sunny rays
Of the Dakota plains I yearn.
